Why Your Dog Sleeps Too Much?

Seeing your dog running around here and there, following you everywhere you go and making you laugh with his/her senseless and innocent activities is what makes him your most lovable companion. Nevertheless, if you see that your furry friend is just snoozing on and on whenever you see him then it’s time to look into the matter. Usually, dogs are active but sometimes they sleep a lot. It depends on the several things that why you pooch sleeps so much.

Let us discover an array of hidden reasons that will help you learn the heavy sleep factor in your pooch.

Breed
When compared to small dogs, large dogs need more sleep. The sleeping pattern of large dogs is normally between 14 and 18 hours, which seems too long. When having large breed dogs never mind how much they sleep. It’s their natural sleep requirement. Moreover, such breeds are best option for apartment living.

Environment
As we don’t like noisy environment, same as pooches can’t sleep properly in such environment. Dogs are light sleepers and disturbing environments badly affect them. Moreover, very cold or hot weather, bright light and even being uncomfortable can disturb their sleep. It may be common for pet parents to think that dogs can sleep anywhere, whether on a bed or pebbled place. It is true they can probably sleep but they would get much better sleep when they are provided with cozy and comfortable spot to curl up in. So, when they are provided with the best cozy and comfortable bed and serene environment, they just love to snooze on.

Age
Puppies and older canines need more sleep compared to adult dogs. Puppies are very active and spend lot of energy in playing and learning new tricks. Therefore, they need to recuperate, and thus they sleep for 18-20 hours. On the other hand, due to age, older dogs put more efforts in doing everything. They easily exhaust and require rest to recover. Age plays significant factor in deciding how much they sleep.

Food
Food too decides how much your pooch is sleeping. Heavy food makes your furry friend to fall asleep. Whereas low quality food does not provide all the required nutrients needed for a healthy dog. Lack of proper nutrients does not give them enough energy and due to insufficient energy, they sleep too often.

Activity Level
Service dogs and working dogs often require less amount of sleep compared to companion pets that spend most of their time indoors. With no activity to involve in pets often feel bored and to kill this boredom, they often sleep.

Health
To make pets sleep too much, their health also plays a pivotal role. A healthy dog sleeps less than a dog that is sick or suffering from some infestation or is on some prescription treatment. Thus, some health conditions and medications may also cause your dog to fall sleep like a log.

Apart from these several reasons, if you find that recently your pet is sleeping too much without any obvious reason, consulting a vet is the best option. Find out what makes him doze off so much.
